Around Wellington - Wainuiomata Coast

Just for fun, we decided to explore a remote beach on the Wainuiomata coast. It's about half an hour's drive from Wellington, and we nearly had the place to ourselves. We are told this is a good place to see fur seals and sea birds.

It didn't take long for the kids to get into the water.

Plenty of big rocks to climb and explore. So exciting to find puddles of water with creatures in them up on top of a big pile of rock.

And did I mention that there were sheep? Most of this beach is private property - grazing sheep. I can't say that I've ever been to a beach with sheep before.

Asparagus, Bacon and Egg Salad

Ingredients:

  • 2 hard boiled eggs, peeled and sliced
  • About 2 1/2 cups chopped asparagus (1 lb)
  • 2 slices cooked and crumbled streaky bacon
  • 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar
  • pinch salt and pepper, to taste

Directions:

Bring a pot of water to a boil, add the asparagus and cook 2 to 3 minutes, until tender yet firm. Drain and run under cold water to stop it from cooking further. Set aside.

In a small bowl mix the Dijon, oil, vinegar and a pinch of salt and pepper.

Arrange the asparagus on a plate, top with egg and bacon and drizzle with the vinaigrette. Enjoy!

Around Wellington - Wellington Zoo

I can't believe it took us 10 months to finally get to the zoo! It's a great little zoo, and it's old. Wellington Zoo was founded in 1906. There is a great collection of animals and regularly scheduled talks all around the zoo. One of the best features is The Nest.  Animal check-ups and operations can be viewed and expert comentary by Zoo staff is provided twice a day for live procedures.

Of course, recycling is a big deal and there is a large display of objects made from recyclables.

This zoo is totally kid-friendly with lots of areas for playing and picnicking. One thing I did notice - there were no food vendors or cafes inside the zoo.

This charming bird talks back -

Chimpanzees, waiting for oranges being tossed in by keepers.

Getting up close and personal with the Wallabies

Our beautiful sunny day just turned rainy and windy. Time to go home!
